Al-Ahzab 33:72
The verse opens a contrast between two strata of the cosmos: heavens / earth / mountains (great, fixed, physical systems) ↔ the human being (small, mobile, reasoning).
إِنَّا عَرَضْنَا ٱلْأَمَانَةَ عَلَى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَٱلْجِبَالِ فَأَبَيْنَ أَن يَحْمِلْنَهَا وَأَشْفَقْنَ مِنْهَا وَحَمَلَهَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ ظَلُومًا جَهُولًا
We offered the Trust to the heavens, and the earth, and the mountains; but they refused to bear it, and were apprehensive of it; but the human being accepted it. He was unfair and ignorant

"Amāna" in Arabic is the **handing over of something precious into your keeping although you are not its owner**. The three physical systems refused; they felt fear (ashfaqna). The human accepted. The verse closes with two attributes: "ẓalūm jahūl" — much-wronging, much-ignorant. The verse holds a logical balance: accepting the trust is a mixture of greatness and ignorance.
Observation
In systems theory two conditions are necessary for the bearing of responsibility: consciousness (the faculty of seeing) and freedom (the faculty of initiating action). The heavens, the earth and the mountains are passive systems as physics describes them — they obey their laws, they **cannot make a willed choice**. The human brain bears both conditions: conscious awareness and the faculty of decision (frontal lobe). The verse renders this difference in a language open to observation; science does not reformulate the categorical gap between the human and the physical, it only opens a contemporary window onto the verse's tableau.
Exegesis
Al-Rāzī (Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb) reports ten different readings of "amāna" — the most widely accepted: moral responsibility and free will. Al-Qurṭubī holds that the heavens, the earth and the mountains do not "refuse" by an act of will but in accordance with their nature; the human "acceptance," by contrast, is willed.
