Al-Anbiya 21:32

The verse turns on two key words: "saqf" (roof) and "maḥfūẓ" (guarded).

وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ سَقْفًا مَّحْفُوظًا ۖ وَهُمْ عَنْ ءَايَـٰتِهَا مُعْرِضُونَ

And We made the sky a protected ceiling; yet they turn away from its wonders

Al-Anbiya 21:32 · Translation: talal-itani

Image

"Saqf" in Arabic is the covering over a structure; the verse speaks of the sky as an architectural element. "Maḥfūẓ" is a passive attribute: guarded, watched over, kept safe. The sky, then, is not merely a covering but a covering actively kept.

Observation

Modern planetary science describes Earth's atmosphere as a multilayered shield: the ozone layer filters harmful UV, the magnetosphere deflects the solar wind, the mesosphere burns millions of micrometeoroids daily through friction. Without the atmosphere, Earth's surface would resemble the Moon's — cratered and sterilized by radiation. The image of a "guarded roof" can be set alongside this layered protection; the verse does not enumerate the layers, only affirms that the sky is at once a covering and a guarding.

Exegesis

Classical exegetes read "maḥfūẓ" on two planes: the physical — the sky does not fall upon the earth or split apart; and the metaphysical — the sky is under divine care, holding an order within itself. Ibn Kathīr highlights the verse's closing phrase "yet they turn away from its signs": the sky is a catalogue of signs, but most people do not look.
