Al-A'raf 7:143
A scene in three steps: (1) Mūsā asks "show me"; (2) "you will never see Me; look at the mountain — if it remains in place..."; (3) the manifestation comes, the mountain is reduced to "dakkan" (powder), Mūsā falls senseless.
وَلَمَّا جَآءَ مُوسَىٰ لِمِيقَـٰتِنَا وَكَلَّمَهُۥ رَبُّهُۥ قَالَ رَبِّ أَرِنِىٓ أَنظُرْ إِلَيْكَ ۚ قَالَ لَن تَرَىٰنِى وَلَـٰكِنِ ٱنظُرْ إِلَى ٱلْجَبَلِ فَإِنِ ٱسْتَقَرَّ مَكَانَهُۥ فَسَوْفَ تَرَىٰنِى ۚ فَلَمَّا تَجَلَّىٰ رَبُّهُۥ لِلْجَبَلِ جَعَلَهُۥ دَكًّا وَخَرَّ مُوسَىٰ صَعِقًا ۚ فَلَمَّآ أَفَاقَ قَالَ سُبْحَـٰنَكَ تُبْتُ إِلَيْكَ وَأَنَا۠ أَوَّلُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
And when Moses came to Our appointment, and his Lord spoke to him, he said, “My Lord, allow me to look and see You.” He said, “You will not see Me, but look at the mountain; if it stays in its place, you will see Me.” But when his Lord manifested Himself to the mountain, He turned it into dust, and Moses fell down unconscious. Then, when he recovered, he said, “Glory be to you, I repent to you, and I am the first of the believers.”

"Jabal" — mountain; but here it is set down as **the reference of stability**. If the mountain — the most fixed-looking structure of the earth — cannot bear a manifestation, neither can Mūsā's body. At the end Mūsā says "ana awwal al-muʾminīn" (I am the first of the believers) — knowledge has shifted, status has shifted.
Observation
In seismology the load-bearing limit of rock masses is finite: under a high-energy vibration the bonding fabric breaks down and the mass shatters. Mountains look stable across long geological time-scales, but against a force they are not "rigid" but **brittle** structures. The verse's "dakkan" (reduced to powder) gives this physical fact in visual form; modern geophysics does not reformulate it, it confirms in the language of observation that what looks fixed is in reality fragile.
Exegesis
Al-Qurṭubī (al-Jāmiʿ li-Aḥkām al-Qurʾān) holds that the scene marks a "leap of knowledge" in Mūsā's knowledge of God-as-truth — request + denied request + proof + repentance. Al-Rāzī stresses that the manifestation falls upon the mountain, not upon Mūsā's eye: the evidence came through a mediating sign.
