Yunus 10:22
The verse moves through three scenes: (1) the ship sails on a fair wind — joy; (2) the storm arrives, waves close in from every side — the sense of being surrounded; (3) prayer offered with sincerity.
هُوَ ٱلَّذِى يُسَيِّرُكُمْ فِى ٱلْبَرِّ وَٱلْبَحْرِ ۖ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا كُنتُمْ فِى ٱلْفُلْكِ وَجَرَيْنَ بِهِم بِرِيحٍ طَيِّبَةٍ وَفَرِحُوا۟ بِهَا جَآءَتْهَا رِيحٌ عَاصِفٌ وَجَآءَهُمُ ٱلْمَوْجُ مِن كُلِّ مَكَانٍ وَظَنُّوٓا۟ أَنَّهُمْ أُحِيطَ بِهِمْ ۙ دَعَوُا۟ ٱللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ لَئِنْ أَنجَيْتَنَا مِنْ هَـٰذِهِۦ لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ
It is He who transports you across land and sea. Until, when you are on ships, sailing in a favorable wind, and rejoicing in it, a raging wind arrives. The waves surge over them from every side, and they realize that they are besieged. Thereupon they pray to God, professing sincere devotion to Him: “If You save us from this, we will be among the appreciative.”

"Mawj min kulli makān" (waves from every place) — the image of losing sight of shore. "Mukhliṣīna lahu al-dīn" (devoting religion purely to Him) — distress opens a door to a monotheism in practice; the cornered human arrives not at theoretical monotheism but at lived monotheism.
Observation
The dynamics of an open-sea storm are well documented: high winds (Beaufort 8+) can lift waves to 7–9 metres; a ship cannot keep its angle to the surface, and direction is lost. "Waves from every side" (mawj min kulli makān) describes a known feature of marine hydrography — in stormy seas the dominant wave direction breaks down and cross-seas develop. The verse renders this physical fact in the language of observation; not a dramatic simile, a real cross-section of seafaring life.
Exegesis
Al-Rāzī (Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb) holds that the verse turns a truth shared by every seafaring tradition — that prayer becomes purer as one moves further from shore — into the core argument of the Qurʾān: the human being's natural religion surfaces under pressure; it stays hidden in ease.
